Mentorship Program to Empower Students with Disabilities in Higher Education
On September 7, we had the privilege of convening approximately 90 students, both in person and virtually, for the launch of our Mentorship Program for Students with Disabilities in Ugandan Institutions of Higher Learning.
This initiative reflects our commitment to promoting inclusive education and ensuring that students with disabilities have the support, guidance, and opportunities they need to thrive throughout their academic journeys and beyond. We are grateful to all our partners and stakeholders, including mentors, higher education institutions, disability advocates, and Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), whose support and collaboration have made this important initiative possible.
Many students with disabilities continue to face barriers in higher education, including inaccessible learning environments, inadequate support services, stigma, discrimination, and limited access to accommodations. These challenges often affect their academic performance, well-being, and future career opportunities.
Through this mentorship program, we seek to address these barriers by connecting students with experienced mentors, providing tailored training and capacity-building opportunities, strengthening disability support systems within institutions of higher learning, and advocating for policies that promote accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all students.
Our goal is to empower students with disabilities to excel academically, develop leadership skills, build professional networks, and successfully transition into meaningful careers. By fostering mentorship, peer support, and inclusive learning environments, we are contributing to a future where disability is not a barrier to educational achievement or professional success.
We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. Together with our partners, we remain committed to building a higher education system that is accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs and aspirations of students with disabilities across Uganda.
